5A - Identifying Local Opportunities

Opportunity 1:
Title - Pig-Headed pig's escapades cause owner to face citations
Description - Leroy the pig is too smart for his own good.  He has escaped from his owner's house multiple times over the past few months.  His owner now has to pay citations for owning a fugitive pet.
Problem - Leroy keeps escaping, and owner, Wallace, doesn't know how to keep him inside the gate that he is smart enough to open.
Who Has this Problem? - Owner Wallace and all other pet owners who have pets that are smart enough to escape from their backyards.

Opportunity 2:
Title - Don't snuggle or kiss your chickens, CDC says
Description - A rise is salmonella cases has been linked to backyard poultry.  The CDC recommends that anyone interacting with chickens and ducks to keep them outside and wash hands after contact.
Problem - Backyard poultry, such as chickens and ducks, can be linked to bacterial diseases, such as salmonella.
Who Has the Problem? - Anyone who comes into direct contact with these animals, including households, farmers and manufacturers.

Opportunity 3:
Title - Thinking about flushing your live goldfish? Don't do it.
Description - The article warns against flushing your goldfish down the toilet when you are tired of caring for it.  It cites an example from Buffalo, New York where a former presumably 1 inch large goldfish grew to be 14 inches!
Problem - When goldfish are released into the wild, they become an invasive species, and they ultimately end up taking from the other animals in that environment.
Who Has the Problem? - Communities all over North America have this issue.  Many parents get goldfish for their children, and when they no longer want them, they flush them down the toilet or release them into a local pond.

Opportunity 4:
Title - High School Start Times: Orange to hold public meetings on school schedules
Description - Orange County School District will be holding a series of meetings to discuss possibly changing the start times for school.  Some parents have been complaining that the 7:20 AM start time for high school students is too much for their child.
Problem - Some students are too tired to perform well when school begins at 7:20 AM.
Who Has the Problem? - Some high school students in Orange County Florida.

Opportunity 5:
Title - SunRail Train hits car in Winter Park, leaves man injured, cops say
Description - A man was trying to pass over the train tracks in his car while the warning arms were coming down.  He ended up not making it over in time, and the train ran into him causing minor injuries.  This caused a 45 minute delay in the train's schedule.
Problem - People can sometimes be impatient when it comes to waiting for trains to pass.  This causes them to do stupid things, such as trying to pass after they should.
Who Has the Problem? - Impatient drivers who get stuck behind a train crossing.

  1. Hello Emma !
Your first article is hilarious ! I can't believe someone has a runaway pig of their hands thats pretty unfortunate. You did a great job analyzing and explaining the story of each article. Along with that you seemed to easily differentiate between what was a problem and who had that problem. Over all great job I love getting to read all of your different blog posts !

  2. Hi Emma,
Great articles. I was especially interested in the article about the goldfish. I keep fish as pets in my free time and not introducing invasive fish is a problem most serious fish owners are concerned about. Florida in particular is seriously affected by this issue. Invasive plecostomus catfish are wreaking havoc to canals all throughout south Florida, invasive aquatic plants are out competing the local plants for resources and destroying ecosystems. Many states are having to resort to electrically shocking entire lakes to kill Asian Carp which are slowly taking over our waterways.
